A stronger labour movement begins with a seat at the table.
The Saint John & District Labour Council has been bringing workers together for generations. We are proud to represent unionized workers from a wide range of sectors across our region, creating a place where affiliates can share ideas, support one another, and build a stronger future for working people.
Affiliation is about much more than attending meetings. It is about ensuring that workers have a voice where decisions are made, that unions have partners when challenges arise, and that organized labour remains a respected force in our communities.
One of the accomplishments that sets the Saint John & District Labour Council apart is our labour seat on the Saint John Airport Board of Directors.
To our knowledge, this remains the last labour-appointed seat on an airport board anywhere in Canada. That seat exists because local unions understood the importance of having workers represented wherever decisions affecting our communities are being made.
It is a reminder that labour’s voice belongs everywhere, not just at the bargaining table.
The Labour Council continues to advocate for workers throughout Saint John and the surrounding area, ensuring that the concerns and priorities of working people are heard by community leaders, elected officials, and decision makers.
The future of the labour movement depends on young workers.
That is why the Saint John & District Labour Council has made youth engagement a priority by maintaining a Young Workers’ seat at our table.
We believe that emerging leaders deserve the opportunity to learn, participate, and help shape the future of organized labour. Their ideas, experiences, and perspectives are essential as workplaces continue to evolve.
Building tomorrow’s labour movement starts by welcoming young workers today.
Sometimes the value of affiliation cannot be measured by what happens this month or even this year.
The real value is found in the relationships we build, the collective strength we create, and the opportunities that emerge when unions work together.
Every major advancement won by workers, whether safer workplaces, stronger pensions, better wages, improved benefits, public services, or fair labour laws, was made possible because unions looked beyond their own immediate concerns and stood together.
Labour Councils exist because no union faces every challenge alone. There will be times when another affiliate needs support. There may also come a day when your local needs support. Affiliation ensures that support network already exists.
The Saint John & District Labour Council works throughout the year to:
Whether your local has been affiliated for decades, is considering affiliation for the first time, or may have stepped away in years past, there will always be a place for you at the Labour Council table.
The challenges facing workers today are becoming increasingly complex. The need for solidarity, cooperation, and collective action has never been greater.
Our strength has always come from bringing unions together. Every affiliate adds another voice, another perspective, and another piece of the collective power that makes our labour movement stronger.
We invite all unions that are affiliated to the Canadian Labour Congress that believe in solidarity, worker advocacy, and community leadership to join us in building an even stronger Saint John labour movement.
“When we come together, we accomplish far more than any of us could ever accomplish alone.”
